Tonnie  Haig Sammartano


Tonnie Sammartano is a dancer, teacher, choreographer and producer of
dance. As a dancer she has performed as a company member of Isaacs, Mc-
Caleb and Dancers, San Diego Dance Theater, and Patricia Sandback and
Dancers. Since 1997, Tonnie has annually commissioned five independent
choreographers to set work on her for a showcase entitled “5x1.” In 2001
she expanded the commissioning project to include three more dancers,
entitled “Under the Tongue.” Under this format Tonnie has performed works
by Joe Goode, Kim Epifano, Stephanie Gilliland, Nina Martin, Mary Reich,
Christopher Pilafian, to name a few. Tonnie has received the 1998 and 1999
SDADA Tommy Award for Excellence in individual performance and the
1999 SDADA Tommy Award for Recognition for the 5x1 project. As a teacher
Tonnie has taught at University of California, San Diego, San Diego State
University and Academy of Performing Arts. As a Choreographer she has
been commissioned to do work at University of California, San Diego and
San Diego Dance Theater.
